Background photo: Century Plant Silhouette
I took this photo from my first trip to Big Bend National Park. On the morning of our third day of backpacking, I awoke long before sunrise and sat shivering on a rocky outcropping, waiting for the sun to come up and warm the earth. As I watched the sun come up, its rise tracked the vertical stem of this century plant and momentarily paused behind one of the flower blooms.
This is one of my favorites because inky blackness of the agave plant contrasts so well with the bright yellow of the sun, and how this seems to be superimposed over the moody bed of sunrise hues. It reminds me of the melancholy beauty of the American Southwest.
